        FAWEMA Encourages Teachers to Lead the Charge on Sexual Health Education

Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWEMA) has urged teachers in Dowa to take an active role in promoting the dissemination of accurate information on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) in their schools.


Dowa District Innovations in Health, Rights and Development (iHEARD) Project Officer, Clement Kwaule, made the appeal on the sidelines of an engagement meeting with matrons and patrons from Chinkhwili Zone held at Ndebvu Hope Community Day Secondary School in the district.


“We are prioritizing on sharing of accurate SRHR information as it is essential in bridging knowledge gaps among adolescent girls and boys.We want teachers to be vehicles of change by ensuring that SRHR information reaches as many learners as possible.”he said 


Patricia Chikumbutso, a matron from Ndebvu Hope Community Day Secondary School, shared her insights on the impact of the event.

“This initiative is crucial for our students. It equips us to guide adolescents in understanding their rights and health needs, fostering an environment where they can discuss these topics openly and also this initiative is underscored by the growing need for comprehensive SRHR education, essential for empowering young people to make informed decisions about their health and rights.”she said

Andrew Zimkamban, Patron for Chilinde Primary School, commended the organization for organizing the training, describing it as timely and impactful.


“This is a  good initiative as it will help we teachers to provide accurate information to these adolescents so that they should be aware of the consequences on what they are doing.we also what to thank the iHEARD project of organizing this event and they should also do the same to the other parts of the country.”he said 


The  iHEARD project is being implemented in Lilongwe, Dowa and Ntchisi and is being funded by Global Affairs Canada (GAC)

  1. So inspiring to see teachers leading the way in promoting SRHR education! Young people need safe spaces and trusted adults to guide them... this initiative is definitely a step in the right direction
