Mzilawaingwe Township fights to improve education

By Adrian Simango

Mzilawaingwe village in Mzuzu is taking bold steps to promote education while facing challenges such as poverty and a lack of awareness about children’s rights to schooling.

Township block leader, Zao Falook, said one of the biggest obstacles is that many parents do not understand the importance of education.

“Many parents in the village are unaware of their children’s right to education. Poverty is another challenge, as some parents hesitate to send their children to school without ensuring they have enough to eat,” she said.

She commended Mary’s Meals for providing porridge to primary school children, which has helped reduce absentees caused by hunger.

Chief Falook has called on Mzuzu city authorities to close unregistered beer shops, which she said attract students and disrupt their education.

“Creating a sage and conducive learning environment is essential,” she said.

Village development committee senior member Enock Chirwaurged students to understand that their rights should be used to excel in their studies rather than as excused for bad behaviour.

“Teachers should educate students on their rights while ensuring they do not misuse them,” he said.

Mellas Chunga, a teacher at St. Peter’s primary school near Mzilawaingwe raised concerns about students misinterpreting their rights. “A lack of understanding of rights is a significant barrier to education.”

She called for a review of certain rights to prevent students from engaging in misconduct under the guise of exercising their freedom.

A parent from the village, Muhammad Milanzi, stressed the need for more parental involvement in education.

“The lack of awareness and education among parents is a major barrier to promoting education,” he said.
