Nyika Media Club donated essential items to female inmates at Mzuzu Prison as part of celebrating this year's Mother's Day. The journalists donated   items like sugar, wrappers (Zitenje), writing materials, Sanitary Pads, Soap, Salt and Soya pieces. This initiative not only highlights the spirit of giving but also emphasizes the resilience of these women as they strive to create better futures for themselves and their families.

Reflecting on her journey one of beneficiaries Anne Sungani who is also inmate at Mzuzu Prison shared her thoughts on Mother's Day, highlighting the lessons she has learned during her time behind bars.

“As we celebrate Mother's Day, I reflect on my journey and the lessons learned during my time here. This event reminds me that I am not defined by my past mistakes but by my ability to rise above them for my children and my future. I hope to be a better mother and role model for my kids when I return home." she said

Nyika Media Club chairperson,  Feston Malekezo said women who are behind bars face challenges hence a decision to cheer them for moral and social support.

" We write stories on the challenges which the inmates face.  It is also important that we act and mostly these female inmates are not reached out in celebrations like these, but they are important in the society. As a team we commend Gabriel General Trading and Nyika Property Consultants and Valuers for their generous support and members for their contribution." he said.

Mzuzu Prison spokesperson, McBeth Wasamba applauded the journalists for the initiative

“This donation marks a significant milestone for our women prisoners as they celebrate Mother's Day. It not only brings joy but also reinforces their sense of community and support. We urge other well-wishers to join us in uplifting these women, particularly in the area of education, as it is crucial for their reintegration and future success. "he said

Last year, Nyika Media Club also donated food and non-foods stuffs at Mapale Urban Health Centre in Mzuzu on Mother's Day.
